Turkey and Iraq Hold High-Level Security Talks

Türkiye and Iraq are set to hold high-level talks in Ankara, marking the inaugural meeting of a 'Joint Planning Group' co-chaired by their foreign ministers. This meeting aims to enhance cooperation on security issues, particularly in light of Turkey's military operations against PKK militants, which Iraq views as a violation of its sovereignty. Relations have improved since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad in April, where both nations agreed to pursue structured cooperation. The discussions will encompass the implementation of 27 agreements signed during Erdogan's visit and explore further initiatives. Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler indicated that these steps signify a 'turning point' in counter-terrorism efforts, while expressing expectations for Iraq to officially label the PKK as a terrorist organization. The dialogue seeks to institutionalize their partnership and bolster regional security.
