PWHL Plans Two New Expansion Teams
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is set to explore expansion options with plans to add up to two franchises for the 2025-26 season. Senior VP of operations, Jayna Hefford, stated that all North American markets are under consideration, including Seattle and Southern California, as the league aims to capitalize on the support received in its inaugural year. The league has targeted over 20 markets for requests for proposals, with responses expected by the end of December to gauge interest. Potential U.S. candidates include Detroit, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia, while Quebec City and Calgary are being considered in Canada. The second season of the PWHL starts on November 30, featuring an expanded schedule of 30 games per team. Neutral-site games are also planned in nine North American markets, with future European games being considered.
