At 65, Louganis is relocating to Panama to rediscover his identity beyond his athletic legacy and begin a new chapter traveling light. The auction of two gold medals and one silver dramatically exceeded expectations, fetching $437,000, significantly more than the initial $80,000 estimate, which he attributed to being honest about his need for money. Louganis expressed a desire to leave behind his previous self and external expectations, emphasizing a personal journey to embrace life fully, including its joys and hardships. His decision was partly inspired by the devastating Woolsey and Palisades wildfires, which destroyed homes of close friends, motivating him to let go of possessions and seek a fresh start.
