The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unlocked the biometrics of over 9 lakh individuals in Assam whose Aadhaar registration was hindered during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in 2019. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that approximately 5 lakh Aadhaar cards have already been generated, with 12,000 to 13,000 cards set to be dispatched to Tinsukia on September 23 as part of a pilot project. This initiative comes after the Union Home Ministry intervened to resolve the bureaucratic issues that left these citizens without identification. Sarma emphasized that there is no connection between those whose names are missing from the NRC list and those with locked biometrics. Moving forward, new applicants for Aadhaar in Assam will be required to provide their NRC application receipt number. Citizens can check their Aadhaar status online or through UIDAI's helpline.
