Australia Antisemitism Envoy Denies Involvement in Husband’s $50,000 Advance Donation

Australia's antisemitism envoy, Jillian Segal, has publicly distanced herself from a $50,000 donation made by a trust linked to her husband, John Roth, to the controversial conservative lobby group Advance Australia. Advance Australia is known for its right-wing positions, including anti-immigration stances, criticism of Indigenous Voice to Parliament, and opposition to Welcome to Country ceremonies. Despite Henroth Investments, directed by Roth and his brother, also donating to the Liberal Party, Segal emphasized she had no involvement or influence over her husband's political donations. Segal recently released a comprehensive report with recommendations to combat rising antisemitism, a role appointed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who urged the report not be politicized. Advance Australia has been a significant player in conservative political campaigns, notably opposing the Voice referendum and criticizing the Labor government, which Segal’s work supports. While some Jewish groups have welcomed Segal’s proposals to address antisemitism, others have raised concerns about potential impacts on free speech.
