Eight Escapees Recaptured After New Orleans Jail Security Failures
A total of 10 inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans by exploiting multiple severe security lapses, including dismantling a toilet to access a hole in the wall and then scaling a barbed-wire fence. Former federal prison warden Cameron Lindsay criticized the jail as a "train wreck" with inadequate security protocols and emergency preparedness, highlighting that essential inspections were not conducted and that high-security inmates were improperly housed together. The jail, which is under federal oversight due to past civil rights abuses, showed only partial compliance with necessary reforms, with ongoing issues such as violence, drug use, and extortion schemes among inmates. After the escape on May 16, it took hours for jail staff to realize the inmates were missing, and law enforcement agencies launched an extensive manhunt across New Orleans and beyond. So far, eight of the ten escapees have been recaptured in locations including Baton Rouge and Texas, with two still at large. Authorities continue to investigate the facility’s failures and pursue the remaining fugitives while acknowledging the cooperation among multiple law enforcement agencies in the recaptures.
