ProRail, Nokia Launch Global First GSM-R Upgrade

ProRail, the Netherlands' national rail infrastructure manager, has contracted Nokia to deploy a cloud-native GSM-R core network, marking the first global deployment of this technology in the rail industry. The four-year modernization project aims to enhance safety and reliability for millions of passengers, extend the life of the existing 2G infrastructure, and prepare for the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). The initiative includes upgrades to Nokia's MantaRay network management system, automated network backup solutions, and automation of IP, optical, and microwave networks, alongside the supply, installation, and maintenance of the Nokia Cloud Platform. ProRail expects the partnership to reduce downtime, lower long-term ownership costs, and enable integration of emerging technologies. Nokia underscores the importance of secure, reliable communications to support sustainable and efficient mobility. The project positions ProRail to meet operational and technological needs for the next decade.
