Parents Sue Coconut Grove Sailing Club $10M

The parents of 11-year-old Catherine (Cate) Viteri have filed a $10 million lawsuit in Miami-Dade Circuit Court against the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and three counselors after a counselor-operated motorboat ran over her during a July 10 swimming exercise, slicing her right leg to the bone and nearly amputating it. The complaint says a 21-year-old counselor lost track of campers and struck Catherine with the propeller, leaving her with gruesome, permanent mutilation, disfiguring scars and limited function though she is able to walk; attorney Justin B. Shapiro described the injuries as extremely graphic. The suit names the counselors as Myles Carter Holt, Aden Weinberg and Sara Ortiz Vey and accuses the club of negligent entrustment as well as inadequate training and supervision. The Viteri family says they seek accountability to force better training and clearer safety guidelines for camps so this does not happen to other children. The Coconut Grove Sailing Club has not commented to media outlets, and the incident occurred 18 days before a separate barge-sailboat crash off Miami Beach that killed three youth campers, underscoring broader sailing-safety concerns.
