Atlanta United Terminates Carlos Bocanegra

Atlanta United has terminated Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra, effective immediately, following a period of perceived poor recruitment and declining team performance. Bocanegra, who joined the club in 2015, played a crucial role in Atlanta's early successes, including their 2018 MLS Cup win. However, the team has struggled in recent seasons, failing to make significant playoff runs and currently sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference. Garth Lagerwey, the club's president and CEO, will assume Bocanegra's duties on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2024 season. Lagerwey emphasized the need for a new direction as the club prepares for an important offseason. Team owner Arthur Blank and Lagerwey both expressed gratitude for Bocanegra's contributions but acknowledged the necessity for change.
