China-Linked Fake Social Media Campaign Targets Philippines US Alliance
A coordinated Chinese government-linked social media campaign has been uncovered targeting the Philippines, a key U.S. ally, to influence public opinion against American interests and promote pro-Beijing narratives. The campaign, orchestrated by the Chinese embassy in Manila through a local marketing firm called InfinitUs Marketing Solutions, involved creating fake Facebook and X accounts, including a media outlet named Ni Hao Manila disguised as Filipino-run, to spread disinformation and propaganda. These fake accounts disparaged the U.S.-Philippine alliance, criticized Western-made COVID-19 vaccines, and amplified content favoring China's military and geopolitical stance in the South China Sea. Prominent Filipino figures, including politicians and media personalities, reportedly received cash awards linked to pro-China advocacy through groups like the Association of Philippines-China Understanding. Despite the removal of many fake accounts by platforms such as Meta and TikTok, Philippine officials warn that these digital campaigns aim to weaken the country's sovereignty and make it more compliant with Beijing's interests amid escalating regional tensions. The revelations highlight the growing role of information warfare in U.S.-China rivalry and raise concerns about digital sovereignty and election integrity in the Philippines.
