Developers submit plans for 183 affordable homes in Derbyshire, Shrewsbury, Edgbaston
Wheeldon Brothers Limited has submitted an outline planning application to Amber Valley Borough Council for an 80-home residential development west of Crosshill, between Codnor and Heanor, aimed at addressing the local shortfall in affordable housing. The scheme includes a mix of one- to four-bedroom properties and aligns with national policies to boost new home supply, but it faces significant public opposition, with concerns about narrow local roads, flooding, infrastructure pressure, and environmental impact. Despite 52 out of 55 public comments opposing the plan, the local highways team raised no objections, provided contributions are made to improve pedestrian, cycle, and bus infrastructure, and the developer has revised plans to increase garden sizes and parking. Separately, Wavensmere Homes has proposed a £45 million redevelopment of the vacant Clarendon Suites site in Edgbaston, Birmingham, to build 165 homes featuring low-rise buildings that blend traditional and contemporary styles, with an emphasis on three-bedroom houses for young families and green energy standards. This project, supported by local stakeholders, aims to revitalize a long-vacant site while preserving mature trees and providing public and communal open spaces. Both developments reflect ongoing efforts to meet housing demand and affordability challenges in their respective regions.
