Naperville District 203 Teachers Authorize Strike Ahead School Start

Teachers in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike if necessary, although there are no immediate plans to do so as the school year begins. The Naperville Unit Education Association (NUEA) has been negotiating with the district since February over a new contract, with key disputes centered on proposed changes to the school day structure and salary concerns. NUEA President Ross Berkley emphasized that striking is a last resort, and if it occurs, parents will be given plenty of notice to make childcare arrangements. The district's latest offer includes an average compounded raise of over 10% in the first two years and a starting salary increase of more than 5%, but it would require budget cuts and staffing reductions. Union leaders argue that current salaries lag behind neighboring districts and cite strong district finances as justification for their demands.
