World Leaders Rally for Sudan Peace Amid Devastating Humanitarian Crisis
World leaders and key regional organizations convened at the United Nations General Assembly to coordinate efforts to end the devastating war in Sudan, which has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and nearly 13 million displaced, with 24 million people facing acute food insecurity. For the first time since the conflict began in April 2023, influential external powers, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, agreed on a roadmap calling for a three-month humanitarian truce followed by a permanent ceasefire and a transition to an independent, civilian-led government within nine months. The group known as the Quad met to discuss implementing this roadmap alongside other international actors such as the African Union, European Union, and regional blocs. Additionally, a broader meeting of 20 countries and five regional blocs outlined ten non-negotiables for peace, emphasizing direct negotiations, protection of civilians and critical infrastructure, and coordinated humanitarian aid. The collective efforts aim to halt the ongoing conflict that threatens the future stability of Sudan and the wider region, highlighting the urgency of diplomatic engagement and humanitarian relief. These discussions come as the Sudanese conflict remains the world's most severe humanitarian crisis, demanding immediate and sustained global action.
