Oxnard Couple Convicted of First-Degree Murder in Ex-Girlfriend Killing

Margarita Jimenez and Jorge Garfias, an Oxnard couple, were convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Garfias's ex-girlfriend, Yanelly Vargas. On March 17, 2024, Vargas was lured outside an Oxnard bar by a text from Garfias, leading to a physical altercation and subsequent shooting by Jimenez, who was caught on surveillance footage firing a handgun at Vargas. Vargas suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, along with multiple blunt force injuries and signs of strangulation, according to the autopsy. The couple was acquitted of kidnapping charges, but Jimenez was found to have personally and intentionally discharged the firearm. Evidence at the scene included a blood trail, a spent 9mm shell casing, acrylic nails matching Jimenez, and a blood-stained yellow rope. A further court trial on additional special allegations and aggravating factors is scheduled, and the Ventura County District Attorney expressed gratitude for the police investigation and jury's careful consideration.
