Dutch F-35 Jets Deploy to Estonia for NATO Mission

The Netherlands has deployed four F-35A jets to Ämari Air Base in Estonia to bolster NATO airspace monitoring from December 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, as part of a rotational air policing mission amidst heightened tensions with Russia. This deployment follows the completion of significant renovations at the airbase, marking it as the first NATO operation to utilize the newly upgraded facilities. The presence of 90 to 150 Dutch personnel will enhance air defense capabilities in the region, responding to the ongoing Russian threat, including recent drone incidents in the Baltic states. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans emphasized the F-35s as part of a high-tech defense strategy to assure collective security within NATO. The Netherlands had previously supported NATO operations in the Baltic region and will continue its commitment by increasing defense spending and acquiring additional F-35s. This move aligns with NATO's broader strategy to strengthen air defense in Eastern Europe, especially in light of recent calls from Baltic defense ministers for enhanced protection against Russian military actions.
