Former FIA Steward Tim Mayer Plans FIA Presidency Bid Near Silverstone
Tim Mayer, a veteran American motorsport official and former FIA steward, is set to announce his candidacy for the presidency of the FIA in the December 2025 election, challenging incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Mayer, son of former McLaren team co-founder Teddy Mayer, brings over three decades of experience in motorsports, including senior roles in U.S. racing series and a long tenure as an FIA steward, notably in Formula 1. His dismissal by Ben Sulayem in late 2024, following his representation of the Circuit of the Americas in a dispute over a fine, has fueled his decision to run, amid wider dissatisfaction and multiple senior departures within the FIA. Mayer will need to present a team of officials and gain approval from the FIA nominations committee to stand officially. The challenge comes after rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. declined to run against Ben Sulayem, who is seeking a second term amid criticism over transparency and management style. Drivers like Mercedes' George Russell have expressed support for a contested election, viewing competition as beneficial for the sport's governance.
