Gilbert experienced severe discomfort and guilt from sounds like chewing and tapping during her childhood, which worsened with age. Misophonia, which triggers fight-or-flight responses, is not officially recognized as a distinct disorder but has gained acknowledgment from some medical experts. Gilbert only discovered the name for her condition in adulthood and felt immense relief upon diagnosis. She now collaborates with the Duke Center for Misophonia and Emotional Regulation to raise awareness and has undergone cognitive behavioral therapy to manage her symptoms.
