US Plans 'Privileged' Tariff Talks with 15 Countries, Includes Switzerland
Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter announced that Switzerland is among 15 countries selected by the United States for 'privileged' negotiations aimed at resolving issues sparked by recent sweeping U.S. tariffs on dozens of nations. The discussions, which followed her meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and participation in IMF meetings in Washington, are intended to quickly address trade uncertainties that have unsettled global markets. Although the complete list of the 15 countries has not been disclosed, Keller-Sutter emphasized both sides' eagerness to move forward swiftly, noting that economic uncertainty is detrimental. The negotiations will begin following the drafting of a memorandum of understanding outlining key topics and assigning specific contacts within the U.S. administration. Previously, Swiss exports to the U.S. were threatened with tariffs as high as 31%, higher than those targeting EU goods, but some of these measures have been temporarily paused to allow for further dialogue. The U.S. is Switzerland’s largest export market for goods and Switzerland is a significant market for U.S. services, underscoring the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
