Murata Launches First XBAR High-Frequency Filter for 5G, Wi-Fi, 6G Devices
Murata Manufacturing has begun mass production and commercial shipment of the world’s first high-frequency filter utilizing XBAR technology, developed in collaboration with its subsidiary Resonant Inc. This filter combines Murata's proprietary Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) expertise with XBAR technology to achieve low insertion loss and high attenuation, crucial for advanced wireless standards including 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, and emerging 6G. As wireless communication demands grow, especially in higher frequency ranges, the filter addresses challenges like out-of-band interference, battery efficiency, and space constraints where traditional Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) and conventional Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) filters fall short. The XBAR structure uses comb-shaped electrodes and a piezoelectric single-crystal thin film to excite bulk acoustic waves, enabling performance beyond conventional filters and effectively removing high-frequency interference above 3 GHz. Key specifications include a passband of 5150–7125 MHz, typical insertion loss of 2.2 dB, and significant attenuation across multiple frequency ranges. Targeted for devices with embedded wireless functionality such as smartphones, wearables, and notebook PCs, this innovation promises clearer signal detection and enhanced high-speed, high-capacity wireless communication.
