Durham plans state-of-the-art facility for women's sport

Durham Women FC and Durham Cricket are collaborating to develop a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to women's sports at the Chester-le-Street Riverside Complex. This proposed center aims to include the UK's first stadium designed specifically for female athletes and fans, along with training and performance facilities for both teams. The project also incorporates a 150-room hotel to support residential sports events, enhancing community engagement in women's and junior sports. Lee Sanders, Director at Durham Women FC, emphasized the importance of creating a multi-purpose hub that serves local sports teams and provides recreational space for the public. While plans are still in early stages and subject to further consideration, the initiative aligns with the North East's ambition to be recognized as the UK's first Region of Sport. Both clubs hope this development will benefit the local economy and promote greater participation in women's sports.
