India Advances Multi-State Agriculture, Trade, Sustainability Strategies
India is taking multiple strategic steps to enhance its agricultural sector's resilience, productivity, and export potential. Maharashtra is integrating Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) into its policies to build farmer capacity and address climate-related challenges like water scarcity, aiming to embed resilience into its developmental agenda. Uttar Pradesh has launched an ambitious vision to become India's leader in crop productivity and agricultural exports by 2030, focusing on modern infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, and innovation. At the national level, APEDA has introduced the BHARATI initiative to support 100 agri-food startups, fostering innovation and targeting $50 billion in agri-food exports by 2030, with strong international collaboration, notably with the UAE. Despite India being a top producer of key horticultural crops like bananas, mangoes, and potatoes, export volumes remain low, prompting calls for improved logistics, market access, and value-chain integration to bridge the gap and boost global competitiveness. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh exemplifies efforts to balance agricultural productivity with biodiversity conservation through targeted investments under the Biodiversity Finance Initiative, ensuring sustainable long-term growth.
