Boeing 777X Delivery Delayed to 2027 Amid Certification Challenges
Boeing's 777X widebody jet, initially slated for service entry in 2020 and later pushed to 2026, is now delayed until early to mid-2027 due to ongoing certification challenges and technical complexities, particularly with its folding wingtip design and engine integration. This delay marks a nearly decade-long postponement since the program's 2013 announcement, severely impacting launch customers such as Lufthansa, Emirates, and Qatar Airways, who remain committed but increasingly impatient. The postponement has financial implications for Boeing, with anticipated charges ranging from $1 billion to $4 billion and lowered cash flow projections, compounding pressures from previous 737 MAX issues and labor disputes. Despite the setbacks, Boeing maintains the 777X's advanced features, including fuel-efficient GE9X engines and cabin innovations, will justify the wait amid growing demand for international air travel. Airbus benefits from Boeing's delays as airlines like Emirates consider alternatives such as the A350-1000 to upgrade their fleets. Boeing's CEO Kelly Ortberg acknowledges the significant certification work ahead but reports no new technical problems, with the company preparing for further challenges ahead of the 2025 Dubai Airshow, where the 777X was originally unveiled.
