Leander Paes Critiques Decline of Indian Tennis

Legendary Indian tennis player Leander Paes has expressed concern over the decline of Indian tennis, attributing it to the 'circle of life' and emphasizing the importance of patience. Following a 0-4 defeat to Sweden in the Davis Cup World Group I tie, which relegated India to the play-off stage for the upcoming year, Paes noted that tennis has experienced significant ups and downs over the past four decades. Currently, Sumit Nagal is the only Indian player in the ATP men's singles top 100, ranking at 83, while the women's scene is dire with no players in the top 200. Paes highlighted the historical success of Indian tennis, citing nearly 40 Grand Slam titles won collectively by Indian players over the years. He insists that with patience, Indian tennis will rebound from its current slump, reinforcing the growth of tennis as the second most popular sport in India after cricket.
