The Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney's Office has determined that a Waynesboro police officer was justified in the shooting of Kevin David Taylor II during an hour-long standoff on April 10. Taylor, a suspect in a previous shooting incident, engaged police on I-64, repeatedly asking them to shoot him, which culminated in the officer firing seven rounds after Taylor retreated into his car with two handguns. Commonwealth Attorney James Hingeley's report states that the officer's use of deadly force was justified as Taylor posed a threat to law enforcement and attempted to provoke them into shooting him. Although tragic, the report emphasizes that law enforcement made efforts to de-escalate the situation for nearly an hour. Taylor's death has been ruled as having no criminal liability on the officer's part due to the circumstances of the confrontation.
