Kerala's Health Department, in collaboration with Malabar Cancer Centre, is establishing the state’s first bone marrow registry to improve matching stem cells for leukemia patients and reduce transplant costs. This registry will be integrated with the Kerala cancer registry and linked to the World Marrow Donor Association to facilitate global donor matches. Concurrently, Melbourne researchers at Murdoch Children's Research Institute have successfully created lab-grown blood stem cells that mirror human embryonic cells, offering a potential shift in treating leukemia and bone marrow failure. These lab-grown cells, tested on mice, functioned comparably to umbilical cord blood transplants, opening the door for personalized therapies and reducing reliance on donors. The breakthrough allows the possibility of creating an unlimited supply of patient-specific stem cells, minimizing rejection risks. This advancement could significantly impact cancer treatment and bone marrow transplants globally.
