The Jayakwadi dam in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has opened 18 of its 27 radial gates to release water into the Godavari river due to continued heavy inflow from upstream areas, currently discharging at a rate of 9,432 cusecs. The dam's storage reached 98.4% of its capacity, prompting authorities to issue warnings to nearby residents about rising water levels and potential flooding. Earlier, the discharge had already increased from 3,144 cusecs to 6,288 cusecs within hours on Monday, with additional gates opened as needed. Officials indicated that the discharge will be regulated based on weather conditions and upstream inflows, which have recently surged following significant rainfall. Residents along the riverbanks have been urged to exercise caution and stay alert, particularly as the monsoon season continues. The dam is crucial for supplying water for drinking and irrigation across several districts, alleviating previous concerns over water scarcity.
