Taye Atske Selassie Elected President of Ethiopia

Ethiopian lawmakers have elected Taye Atske Selassie as the new president, succeeding Sahle-Work Zewde, who served since 2018. Sahle-Work's tenure was marked by significant achievements, including a Nobel Peace Prize for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, but it ended amid increasing public criticism and speculation about her leadership amid ongoing conflicts in the country. Taye, previously foreign minister and a seasoned diplomat, will serve in a largely ceremonial role, with the prime minister holding the key decision-making power. This transition leaves Tanzania as the only African nation with a female president. The change comes after Sahle-Work hinted at her dissatisfaction through a social media post, prompting speculation about her possible resignation. Taye can serve for a maximum of two six-year terms as Ethiopia's fifth president since the current constitution was adopted in 1995.
