Multiple Airports Expand Rapid EV Charging Infrastructure
Manx Utilities has proposed converting part of the commercial hire car parking area at Ronaldsway Airport on the Isle of Man into six new electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, featuring a solar panel canopy to power the chargers. This initiative addresses the urgent need for more rapid charging points on the island, which currently has only four rapid chargers for nearly 1,600 registered EVs, aiming to support businesses, commuters, airport staff, and patrons. The solar canopy with battery storage is expected to reduce grid load and contribute to an estimated 3,000 tonnes of annual carbon savings. Similarly, the Pennsylvania Turnpike has expanded its EV charging infrastructure by adding high-speed chargers at Somerset service plazas, with plans to install chargers at all service plazas by 2027 to support EV adoption and reduce carbon emissions. Meanwhile, Munich Airport has launched a new electric bus depot with 37 charging stations for battery-electric buses as part of its Net Zero 2035 strategy, aiming to eliminate its CO₂ footprint by 2035 through electrified ground operations and expanded charging infrastructure powered in part by photovoltaic systems. These developments reflect a growing global commitment to expanding EV charging infrastructure, promoting sustainable transport, and reducing carbon emissions in airport and roadway environments.
