CDMX police chief killed
Milton Morales Figueroa, the chief of intelligence for Mexico City's police, was shot and killed in Coacalco while off-duty, marking a troubling escalation in violence against law enforcement and public figures in Mexico. The attack occurred outside a poultry store, where Morales was shot multiple times by a lone gunman, resulting in his immediate death, while an elderly man with him was also injured. Morales was set to join former Security Minister Omar García Harfuch in the new federal administration led by Claudia Sheinbaum. Authorities, including Mexico City Mayor Martí Batres and Security Secretary Pablo Vázquez, condemned the attack as cowardly and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. This incident follows the recent murder of an Indigenous rights defender and his family in Oaxaca, highlighting a broader trend of violence against activists and officials. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known for its involvement in organized crime and drug trafficking, is suspected to be behind many such attacks.
