New Monaghan Bog Search Continues IRA Victim Remains Recovery

Investigators continue to search Bragan Bog in County Monaghan for the remains of Columba McVeigh, one of the Disappeared abducted and murdered by the IRA during the Troubles. The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) has conducted multiple searches since 1999 and is now exploring an unexcavated area following a review after the last search ended in November 2023 without success. The ongoing search began in mid-August 2025 and was delayed earlier due to protected hen harriers nesting in the area. At a recent event marking International Day of the Disappeared, family members and supporters gathered to remember the Disappeared and appeal for information to help locate the missing remains. The WAVE Trauma Centre, which supports victims' families, emphasized the enduring pain of not knowing the burial sites and the universal desire to lay loved ones to rest. Four of the 17 Disappeared, including McVeigh, Joe Lynskey, Robert Nairac, and Seamus Maguire, have yet to be found, with families continuing their calls for any information that could aid the searches.
