Thailand's Olympic Gold Medallist Somluck Kamsing Sentenced for Attempted Rape

Somluck Kamsing, Thailand's first Olympic gold medallist, has been sentenced to three years, one month, and ten days in prison for the attempted rape and abduction of a 17-year-old girl. The Khon Kaen provincial court found him guilty after a December 2023 incident where the teenager accused him of assaulting her in a hotel following their meeting at a bar. Despite Somluck's claims of a consensual encounter, the court deemed the evidence, including bruising on the victim, to support her allegations. He was granted bail while appealing the conviction and ordered to pay 120,000 baht in compensation to the victim and 50,000 baht to her family. Somluck's case marks a significant fall from grace for the former champion, who was once celebrated for his achievements in boxing. His lawyer has stated that they will continue to pursue more facts in the case as they move forward with the appeal.
