Australian PM Condemns Melbourne Synagogue Arson Amid Rising Antisemitic Attacks
Australia has witnessed a troubling surge in antisemitic attacks amid heightened tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. On a recent Friday night in Melbourne, a man, identified as Angelo Loras, attempted to set fire to the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation while about 20 worshippers were inside; thankfully, no injuries occurred as they evacuated safely. Shortly after, a Jewish-owned restaurant, Miznon, was attacked by a group chanting anti-Israel slogans, with several individuals detained. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the synagogue arson as a "cowardly" and antisemitic act, vowing strong legal action and reaffirming his government's commitment to protecting all communities. Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, urged Australia to act decisively against the alarming 320% rise in antisemitism and criticized the Australian government for decisions perceived to undermine pro-Israel voices. Authorities continue to investigate connections between the attacks, with calls from both Israeli and Australian officials for accountability and enhanced measures to combat this "toxic disease."
