Chicago Police Kill Suspect After Hammond Pursuit
Chicago police fatally shot a suspect in Hammond, Indiana, following a vehicle pursuit that began in Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood after officers responded to a report of a person with a gun wanted for aggravated battery. The suspect crashed near Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street in Hammond and allegedly fired at officers, who then returned fire and struck him. The suspect was transported to St. Catherine Hospital and pronounced dead, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Both involved Chicago officers were hospitalized for observation and are in good condition, with no other injuries reported. The incident is under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Hammond police confirmed that no local officers participated in the shooting, and the Chicago officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation.
