Bloc Québécois to Challenge Trudeau's Government
The Bloc Québécois, led by Yves-François Blanchet, has decided to collaborate with other parties to try and bring down Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government after the Liberals missed a deadline to pass key legislation. The Bloc had set a deadline for the government to pass a bill increasing Old Age Security benefits for seniors and another protecting supply management in international trade, both of which were not met. Despite this, the Liberals have survived two Conservative-led non-confidence votes this fall, with support from the Bloc and the NDP. While the NDP has supported the government so far, their leader Jagmeet Singh has stated that his party will decide on support on a case-by-case basis moving forward. Trudeau, aiming for a fourth term as Prime Minister, remains committed to leading the Liberals in the next election, expected between this fall and October 2025. The Liberals have indicated that they are open to continued communication with other parties to maintain the minority Parliament.
