The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced the identification of 2nd Lt. Alfred J. Hamwey, who was killed in World War II and accounted for nearly 80 years later on May 20, 2024. Hamwey, a pilot in the 360th Service Group, went missing during a mission in January 1945 near Cape Wom, Papua New Guinea. His remains were recovered in late 2022 after extensive searches initiated decades earlier, and he will be buried in Jacksonville on September 12. Additionally, Staff Sgt. Ralph H. Bode from Racine, Wisconsin, was accounted for on December 26, 2023, after being shot down over Germany in 1944. Bode's remains were identified following exhumations of previously recovered unidentified remains, and he will be interred on September 27, 2024. Both cases highlight the ongoing efforts to recover and identify missing service members from past conflicts.
