BAE Systems Successfully Trials Low-Cost Drone-Launched Precision Rockets in US
BAE Systems has successfully trialed its Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) mounted on the Malloy T-150 drone, marking a significant advancement in low-cost counter-drone and precision strike capabilities. The TRV-150 UAS, a modified T-150, demonstrated its ability to launch 70mm laser-guided rockets to destroy both air and ground targets, including engaging airborne drones for the first time, during tests at the US Army Dugway Proving Ground. This development offers a more affordable alternative to expensive systems like Raytheon's Patriot missile, with ammunition costs in the thousands rather than hundreds of thousands of dollars. The modular combat payload can be removed quickly, allowing the drone to be repurposed for logistical or reconnaissance tasks, a feature already utilized by the US Marine Corps and British Royal Navy. BAE Systems intends to localize production of electric motors in the UK to reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers, anticipating growing demand for such adaptable and cost-effective solutions. These advancements reflect the growing military need to counter increasingly prevalent UAV threats, as seen in conflicts like Ukraine, with the technology gaining interest from agencies across the US, Europe, and the UK.
