Net Zero Tracker Report Highlights Commitment Gap

According to the latest report from Net Zero Tracker, over 40% of major companies, cities, and regions have not established targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting a significant 'commitment gap' amid rising net-zero pledges influenced by global crises such as wars and elections. The report, which analyzed commitments from 198 countries, 706 regions, 1,186 cities, and nearly 2,000 companies, shows that while 1,750 entities have made formal net-zero pledges, nearly 1,700 still lack specific targets. Approximately 60% of publicly listed companies have set net-zero goals, reflecting a 23% increase from the previous year, with notable improvements from Asia. However, only 5% of the assessed entities meet the criteria for robust plans to phase out fossil fuels. Experts emphasize the ongoing lack of integrity in these commitments, warning that companies without targets pose significant financial risks and hinder progress in climate action. The report also highlights success stories like Costa Rica, Volvo, and Alphabet, showcasing effective implementation of net-zero pledges.
