Woman dies from severe burns in Port St. Lucie bonfire accident
Karyn Patricia Alva-Torres, a 55-year-old woman, died from severe burns sustained while attempting to light a backyard bonfire in Port St. Lucie. The incident occurred late Friday night when she poured gasoline onto the fire, causing her clothes to ignite. Despite efforts from family members to extinguish the flames with a water hose, Alva-Torres suffered burns covering 97% of her body and succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. Her husband also received treatment for non-life-threatening burns to his hands. The Port St. Lucie Police Department has classified the incident as an accidental death, with no evidence of foul play, although an investigation remains open. This tragic event underscores the dangers associated with using accelerants in fire-related activities.
