Lawmakers Seek Visible ID, Mask Ban for ICE Agents
Democratic lawmakers have introduced legislation at both federal and state levels requiring ICE and CBP agents to display visible identification and banning most face coverings during public operations. The VISIBLE Act, proposed by Senators Alex Padilla and Cory Booker, mandates agents show their agency name and badge number, with exceptions for medical and covert reasons, to increase transparency. Some state bills, including in Massachusetts, would make it a misdemeanor for officers to wear masks during public interactions except for medical or SWAT team uses. Supporters argue these efforts would reduce fear, prevent impersonation, and increase accountability. Federal officials contend that face coverings are necessary to protect agents from doxing and threats, and DHS states agents often verbally identify themselves and wear marked vests. The issue highlights ongoing debates over balancing agent safety with public transparency in immigration enforcement.
