Singapore Blocks Foreign Election Influence on Facebook

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and other senior leaders have condemned attempts by foreign entities to influence the upcoming general election through the use of race and religion. The government has ordered Meta to restrict access to Facebook posts made by two Malaysian politicians and a former Internal Security Act detainee, which urged Singaporeans to vote along religious lines. Both the ruling People's Action Party and opposition groups, including the Singapore Democratic Party and Progress Singapore Party, have collectively rejected foreign interference, emphasizing that only Singaporeans should determine the nation's political direction. Authorities cited the Parliamentary Elections Act, highlighting that it is illegal for foreigners to participate in election activities or online campaigns aimed at influencing the outcome. Senior Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad warned of the dangers of importing divisive politics from neighboring Malaysia. The unified stance across political parties aims to protect Singapore's social cohesion and national sovereignty.
