Hackers bribed Coinbase customer service representatives in India to access sensitive information like phone numbers, addresses, government ID numbers, and some banking details. The attackers attempted to extort $20 million from Coinbase to keep the breach secret, a demand that the company refused. This incident highlights increasing security vulnerabilities within major crypto exchanges, with similar attacks reported at Binance and Kraken. The breach has raised broader concerns about the safety of crypto industry leaders, prompting heightened security measures in some regions, including France. Coinbase estimates remediation costs between $180 million and $400 million and has taken steps such as terminating the involved customer service agents.
