Heavy Rains Kill 38, Evacuate 80,000 Across Beijing, Hebei
Northern China, including Beijing and neighboring provinces, has been hit by unprecedented heavy rains causing floods, landslides, and power outages, with at least 38 fatalities reported. The northeastern district of Miyun was hardest hit, accounting for 28 deaths, while Hebei province experienced a deadly landslide killing at least four people. Over 80,000 residents have been evacuated, and key infrastructure such as roads, power supply, and telecommunications have been severely damaged. The Miyun Reservoir reached its highest water level since 1959, prompting controlled discharges and warnings for further flooding. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for urgent measures to protect lives, with the central government allocating substantial funds to aid affected regions. Heavy rainfall continues to threaten northern and eastern China, with additional disruptions reported in Hong Kong, where the highest rain warning was briefly issued.
