Affordable Senior Housing Opens in Multiple US Cities
Several U.S. cities are addressing the critical shortage of affordable senior housing by repurposing vacant or underused buildings into new, affordable living spaces for seniors. In East St. Louis, Illinois, the New Broadview Senior Living Facility transformed a historic hotel into 110 affordable senior units, revitalizing a blighted building in a city with a high senior population. Washington DC's Ward 4 is seeing a similar effort with the proposed Genevieve N. Johnson Senior Residences, led by Zion Baptist Church, aiming to provide safe, affordable housing that allows seniors to age in place within their community. Dallas introduced Oak Lawn Place, an 84-unit affordable housing project designed specifically for low-income LGBTQ seniors, featuring modern designs and private outdoor spaces. In Florida, two projects stand out: the former Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg is being converted into 71 affordable senior apartments with community services, and Fort Lauderdale opened the Mount Hermon Apartments, offering 104 affordable homes for seniors in a historically Black neighborhood, highlighting community collaboration and affordability in the face of rising rents. These projects reflect a nationwide push to create inclusive, affordable housing options that respect seniors' needs and community ties.
