England Manager Tuchel Drops Arsenal Star From Serbia Squad
England manager Thomas Tuchel has dropped Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly from the 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Serbia despite the player starting and completing the full 90 minutes in the previous 2-0 win over Andorra. Tuchel named a 24-man squad but UEFA rules only allow 23 players for matchday, forcing him to leave one player out; Lewis-Skelly was omitted in favor of other defensive options including Jarrell Quansah, Djed Spence, Tino Livramento, and Reece James. Lewis-Skelly has made a scoring debut for England earlier this year and started in four of Tuchel's five games in charge, but has seen reduced playing time at Arsenal this season behind Riccardo Calafiori. The decision to leave Lewis-Skelly out is not injury-related and could allow the teenager to return to club duties ahead of key fixtures including Arsenal’s Champions League opener. England have won all four of their World Cup qualifiers so far without conceding a goal, though Tuchel has acknowledged some criticism of the team’s attacking performances. The squad for the Serbia match will be tested in a challenging atmosphere at the Rajko Mitic Stadium, which will have reduced capacity following previous crowd issues.
