India, Cyprus Expand Defence, Maritime, Counterterror Cooperation
During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Cyprus, the first in over two decades, both leaders announced expanded defense cooperation, including joint naval operations, enhanced maritime security, and cybersecurity collaboration. They agreed to establish an information-sharing mechanism aimed at countering terrorism and pledged more frequent Indian naval visits to Cypriot ports along with joint training and search-and-rescue exercises. The visit also emphasized the strategic importance of Cyprus in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which aims to boost trade, energy, and digital connectivity, positioning Cyprus as a key hub linking India, the Middle East, and Europe. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus as India’s gateway to Europe and pledged to promote stronger India-EU ties, including advancing a free trade agreement during Cyprus’s EU presidency in 2026. Both leaders underscored a shared vision of regional peace, stability, and prosperity rooted in historical ties and mutual trust. Modi described the visit as the beginning of a new era in India-Cyprus relations, reflecting deep and enduring friendship and cooperation across multiple sectors.
