China Conducts Military Exercises Around Taiwan

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has launched extensive military exercises named 'Joint Sword-2024B' around Taiwan, including operations in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south, and east of the island. The drills, which feature the aircraft carrier Liaoning, focus on enhancing sea and air combat readiness, as well as the capability to enforce blockades on strategic ports. PLA spokesperson Naval Senior Captain Li Xi described the exercises as a necessary response to what Beijing considers separatist activities by Taiwan's leadership, specifically citing remarks from President William Lai. In contrast, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense condemned the exercises as provocative actions, raising concerns over regional stability. This marks the third major PLA military drill around Taiwan in recent years, following similar exercises in August 2022 and May 2024. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for potential escalations amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
