Lammy Heckled at Manchester Vigil as Police Admit Shooting
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was booed and heckled at a vigil in Manchester for victims of the Heaton Park synagogue attack, with mourners shouting “shame on you,” “go to Palestine,” and accusing him of allowing antisemitism to grow. The attacker, Jihad Al‑Shamie, drove into the synagogue gates and stabbed worshippers before being shot dead by police; two worshippers — Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz — were killed and several were seriously injured. Police later acknowledged that one of the two people killed had been accidentally shot by officers responding to the attack. Lammy, who as foreign secretary backed UK recognition of a Palestinian state and supported restrictions on arms sales to Israel, urged unity with Britain’s Jewish community and called on pro‑Gaza protesters to “stop and stand back,” but was repeatedly interrupted and accused of offering “empty words.” Organisers said a planned protest in support of the banned group Palestine Action will go ahead despite government and police pleas to call it off, renewing anger among ministers and some attendees. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the attack and vowed to protect Jewish communities amid debate over whether recent political decisions have emboldened protesters.
