Inaugural Esports Olympics delayed to 2027 in Riyadh

The inaugural Olympic Esports Games, originally planned for 2025, have been postponed to 2027 and will be hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This delay is attributed to complexities in aligning esports with traditional Olympic principles, which include establishing national teams and developing anti-doping measures. The IOC has partnered with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, as well as the Esports World Cup Foundation, to ensure proper organization and game selection. A series of qualification events known as 'Road to the Olympic Esports Games' will commence this year. Saudi Arabia's involvement in hosting the games is part of its broader strategy to enhance its global sports profile, despite critiques regarding its human rights record. IOC President Thomas Bach expressed optimism about the collaboration and the roadmap leading to this historic event.
