Severe Storms Kill 3, Cause Widespread Damage Central New Jersey
A violent and fast-moving severe thunderstorm struck Central New Jersey on July 3, causing widespread destruction, power outages, and at least three fatalities. The storm, marked by wind gusts up to 80 mph and one-inch hailstones, uprooted large trees that damaged homes and blocked major highways, including interstates 78 and 287. One fatality occurred in North Plainfield when a woman pulled over during the storm and was fatally struck by a falling tree and downed electrical wires; two additional deaths were reported in Plainfield. In response to the devastation, the cities of Plainfield and North Plainfield declared states of emergency, and Governor Phil Murphy urged residents to stay indoors and avoid hazards such as downed power lines and burning transformers. The Fourth of July celebrations, including parades and fireworks in affected areas, were canceled as recovery efforts began. Emergency crews and utility workers continue to address the extensive damage and power outages across Somerset, Union, Middlesex, and surrounding counties.
