India focuses on core trade issues to expedite FTAs with Latin America, New Zealand

India is focusing on core trade issues such as import duties and non-tariff barriers in its negotiations for free trade agreements (FTAs) to achieve quicker outcomes, as stated by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal at the CII's India-LAC Business Conclave. This strategy aims to maintain business interest during lengthy negotiation processes and has particular relevance in discussions with the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. Barthwal emphasized that addressing these core issues could significantly enhance trade, potentially doubling bilateral commerce with countries like MERCOSUR and Chile. Additionally, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal announced that negotiations with New Zealand could lead to a tenfold increase in bilateral trade over the next decade, focusing on sectors such as agriculture and pharmaceuticals. The renewed FTA discussions follow a decade-long pause and reflect India's broader strategy to strengthen trade ties globally. These efforts underscore India's proactive approach to fostering international trade and economic growth.
